How to Start your Home Yoga Practice

Establishing a home yoga practice can be very rewarding, but it may take some time and experimentation until you find your flowing consistency.

Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Knowing your why - Define what you want out of it before you start! What kind of practice do you want to build? How often would you like to practice and how much time can you dedicate to it? Do you have any goals for your practice? These can be a specific posture or better control of your breath, or to be more loving and compassionate with yourself on the mat. Remember to be gentle with yourself. The fact that you decided to begin a home practice is an accomplishment by itself.

2. Create a sacred space - Make sure to prepare your space before you begin your practice. Set the scene by making sure that it is clean and by removing distractions (ex. setting your phone to flight mode). You can take it one level ahead by lighting a couple of candles and using essential oils on your wrists. Finally, make sure that you take some time to ground yourself by taking a couple of deep breaths before you begin your asana.

3. Schedule your practice - No one will be waiting for you to show up to class. You just have to make sure that you show up for yourself. You won’t always have the same motivation to jump on your mat, and this is perfectly fine! But this is why it is important to create some sort of schedule for your practice, by putting it in your calendar or in your to-do list. Do whatever works for you to keep yourself accountable!

4. Who is your teacher - There are many different resources for a home yoga practice and many teachers to choose from. So, it is important to take your time and be open to trying new classes until you find the teacher and the style of practice that resonates with you the most!

5. Be gentle - It may take a while to turn your practice into a habit. If you fail to jump on your mat for a while, it’s okay! Return to your practice when you feel ready and take it one day at a time.

6. Tune in to your body - At home, there is no teacher to give you hands-on adjustments and guide you safely. And so, it is very important to constantly listen to your body and respect your boundaries.

7. Don’t skip Savasana - Make sure that you don’t sacrifice Savasana in order to do other choruses at home or to jump back to your computer. This is the time to enjoy the benefits of your practice, and take a moment to just be with yourself while connecting to your breath.

9. Spark your Enthusiasm - Even if you have managed to commit to a consistent home-practice, make sure that you remain inspired through reading books and talking to other yogis. This will help you reconnect to your movement ritual and even motivate you to try out new things and broaden your practice.
